AZ primary election turnout 30 percent

PHOENIX -- Three of every 10 registered voters cast ballots in Arizona's Aug. 24 primary election.
The official canvass signed Tuesday by Secretary of State Ken Bennett puts the turnout at 30 percent, which Bennett says is the highest primary election participation rate since 1990.
The 30 percent turnout rate surpassed Bennett's pre-election prediction of a 20 percent to 25 percent range.
Bennett says he based his prediction on information provided by county election officials.
He attributes the turnout to high interest due to key contested races as well as voter dissatisfaction and a sense that outcomes of some congressional races in Arizona could have a bearing on control of Congress.
Of the 933,650 ballots cast, two-thirds were early ballots.
