Speed cameras coming down on freeways

by Associated Press (September 7th, 2010 @ 6:44am)

PHOENIX - The speed enforcement cameras that Arizona used for two years to ticket drivers on state freeways will begin coming down this week.

The state ended its groundbreaking enforcement program in July after it allowed its contract with Scottsdale-based Redflex Traffic Systems to expire.

The program was panned by critics who said it was intended more as a way to generate revenue than improve safety. The program was supported by those who said it slowed motorists driving at unsafe speeds.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says cameras on Interstates 17 and 10, State Route 51, Loop 101 and U.S. 60 will be dismantled starting this week late at night. The job should be done by November.

Arizona had 76 fixed and mobile cameras at the program's peak.

I don't trust a government that wants to watch its citizens.

To be a safer on our roads. I've heard/read the arguments but I know how they affect me. I slow down. So regardless of any statistics or rants - I think they work and that's what bothers us so much.

The state may be taking down the cameras, but the cities will be stepping in and taking over like Scottsdale did! If this were not true, then why have new sensor strips been installed along the westbound 101 between the 51 and 7th street. BRAND NEW and were installed two weeks ago!!!

Hopefully, whoever technically owns the cameras, will sell them or recycle them, rather than just throwing them in the trash.
