Empty Town Lake bugging nearby residents

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Something is really bugging Tempe residents and office workers near the dry hole that was once the shimmering Town Lake.
Midge flies are gathering around condos and office complexes that front the lake. Experts say the bugs are drawn to lights and like to fly into outdoor patio areas where people sit at night.
Bug zappers say the problem was under control when the lake was full and fish were eating insects. But the fish either died or were swept downstream when the lake's rubber dam failed in July.
A Tempe spokeswoman says the city told exterminators to make the lake's condo areas a priority.
Exterminators are out trying to rid the dry lake bed of the flies and other pests by putting down larvicide in breeding areas. They hope that works until the lake is refilled and stocked with fish.
