McDonald's looks to hire 800 part-timers in AZ

PHOENIX -- McDonald's restaurants around Arizona are serving up more than Big Macs and fries.

More than 250 McDonald's around the state planned to hire between three and eight part-time workers per store on Wednesday.

"It's a part-time opportunity right now, but we are looking for the long-term employee and maybe even the career employee for McDonald's," said Travis Heriaud, who operates 15 restaurants.

The hiring was, in part, to help meet demand caused by the popularity of McLattes and McSmoothies.

Jerry Gehrky with McDonald's said he was flooded with hundreds of applications, even before the job fair began at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"The response has just been tremendous, through online as well as folks walking into the restaurant. We're having a tough time keeping up with giving out the applications."

Gehrke said the work "could be customer service, drive-through, could be working out new McCafe beverage shelf, could be working in the kitchen. Nothing specific, just any job that's out there."

Although the jobs are only part-time at present, Gehrky said, "You can go as far as you want to go. If you're interested in making this a career and you want to move into management, there's no end in sight."

With a competitive wage of $10 an hour and up, McDonald's offers flexible hours, free meals, uniforms and, in some cases, health insurance, depending on the worker's schedule.

The jobs fair came months after McDonald's aired a new commercial on "The New Job" the past summer.

Generation like myself were proud to be the few kids on the block with after school jobs and money in their pocket. When I was 16 I bought my own car, through high school I never asked dad for a dime. Statistics show kids who worked as teens make more than their adult peers later. Kids today want you to buy them a car, phone, laptop and a steady supply of cash.

On the one hand, there's some job growth. On the other hand, those jobs are involved with "unhealthy eating". Decisions, decisions..............

All the illegal alien invaders are either hiding under rocks too scared to come out or have made a run to the border, and I don't mean to Taco Bell. PRAISE!!!!! Wait until SB1070 gets the rest of it's teeth back come November, AZ will be EVEN BETTER!!!

The fast food industry is a strong, growth-oriented business with good, steady jobs - ideal for high school kids, retirees needing additional income or even stay at home moms looking to make a little money. There is no shame in working a minimum wage job. No shame in a working hard for your money and certainly no shame is working to pay your bills, put kids through college, etc., but we've conditioned society to believe that some jobs, like working at McDonald's, are beneath us because of our status in life. Sad.
